What Is a Condom?
A condom is a thin sleeve with a teat at the end that is usually made from latex. Condoms are worn over the penis during sexual activity. Designed to prevent both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs); the condom is the only form of contraception that can do both these tasks at the same time. Condoms are also the most successful form of contraception, proving to be 98% effective.
They work by creating a barrier between the penis and the orifice. Their teats catch the ejaculating sperm stopping it reaching the ovaries and making babies, or spreading infections.
But condoms have a few more tricks up their sleeves (literally!)
Why Do People Use Condoms?
Let’s start with the fact that safe sex is the best sex. When we feel safe, we can relax, let our hair down and enjoy ourselves more. Condoms are usually worn during sexual intercourse but they can also be used for oral sex and when using sex toys.
Sex toys might not get us pregnant but they can spread infection. Some people may use a condom when incorporating sex toys into their couples play. Then there are those clever folk that use a condom during masturbation simply for ease of clean up.
So what else can a condom do?
- Inject flavour into oral sex
- Add exciting new textures for extra stimulation and new dimensions of sensation
- Give peace of mind allowing you to relax and enjoy sex more
- Some can help to delay ejaculation making sex and play, last longer
- Enhance sexual happiness
Different Types of Condoms
Condoms come is an ever increasing variety of colours and designs so you can be sure there is a condom out there for you.
Flavoured Condoms
Covered in delicious flavoured lubricants, these tasty treats are the perfect addition to a blow job. And for those of us that don’t enjoy “the swallow” these condoms catch everything so you don’t have to.
But flavoured condoms aren’t just for oral sex, they are suitable for sexual intercourse too.
Popular flavours include banana, vanilla, bubble gum, mint and strawberry… yummy!
Extra Thin Condoms
Also known as Ultra-Thin Condoms, they are as the name implies. The thin latex is tested to be just as strong as a regular condom. Because they are so thin, they should provide a more natural feeling. The idea is that you won’t notice it during sex and get an experience as close to skin on skin as is possible.
Ribbed & Pleasure Condoms
These textured condoms come complete with dots, bumps and ridges designed to provide additional stimulation. Who would have thought that just a few ribs and dots could make such a difference to your sex life? But trust us, these intricately textured condoms will add extra thrills and spills. By creating extra friction and stimulation exactly where you need it, these clever condoms can make all the difference when it comes to reaching orgasmic heights.
Delay Condoms
If you are looking to last longer in the bedroom then these condoms could be just the ticket. Sometimes known as long-lasting condoms, they tend to be slightly thicker than regular condoms. They work by being lined with a special lubricant containing benzocaine. This active ingredient helps to desensitise the penis meaning they can potentially help to delay ejaculation and prolong sex.
In addition to the lubricant on the inside, these condoms will also be lubricated on the outside making them easy to use and super comfy.
Non Latex Condoms
Allergies shouldn’t affect your sex life. Latex-free condoms are made from a synthetic material called polyisoprene. Being latex free they are the obvious choice for people with a latex allergy. And whilst they are ideal for people who are allergic to regular condoms, they can be used by anybody. Including those looking for a thinner condom.
Non-Latex condoms tend to be thinner than regular condoms due to the material they are made from. Meaning you get an extra intimate sexual experience.
How to Use a Condom
Using a condom isn’t complicated. If you follow these simple steps, it should be as easy as putting your socks on.
- Step One – Take the condom out of the packet. Be careful not tear it. Using fingernails, teeth and wearing jewellery may all cause the condom to rip.
- Step two – Place the condom over the tip of the erect penis making sure you have it the right way around – teat on top.
- Most condoms have a teat on the end to catch the sperm. Any air caught in the teat could cause the condom to break, so use your thumb and forefinger to squeeze the air out of it before gently rolling it down the shaft to the base of the penis.
- Step 3 – The fun bit….. enjoy yourself!
- Step 4 – After sex, be sure to remove the penis while it’s still erect and by holding the condom on at the base.
- Step 5 – Dispose of the condom in a bin. Never put condoms down the toilet. They are non-biodegradable meaning as well as causing potential blockages, they can also harm both the environment and wild life.
What Lubricant Should I Use With a Condom?
Condoms come pre-lubricated which makes them easier to put on and use but we always recommend adding an extra helping of your own. Lubricant is such an easy way to enhance any sexual activity. At passionbugs we believe sex is better wetter!
First and foremost, lube will reduce the potential risk of a condom splitting or breaking because friction is reduced. This is especially important when it comes to anal sex.
Lube heightens sensitivity meaning every touch, every stroke, every movement is magnified so you get more pleasure. Lube makes insertion smoother allowing everything to slip and slide more easily. What’s not to love?!
But which lubes can you use when it comes to condoms?
Non Latex Condoms
When it comes to latex free condoms you can use any type of lubricant you like. Oil-based, silicone or water based are all absolutely fine.
Latex Condoms
However, if you’re using latex or polyisoprene condoms, then you need to avoid oil-based lubricants. Oil can damage latex condoms and make them break. This includes baby oil, coconut oil and Vaseline.
If in doubt use a water-based lubricant. Our best selling Loving Joy Slide lubricant is safe for use with all condoms and all sex toys so you don’t need to worry about anything except your pleasure!
Common Condom Questions
How effective are condoms?
Condoms are one of the most effective forms of contraception available. When worn and used correctly, condoms are 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. This means of 100 people, only 2 will become pregnant in any one year.
Condoms are also 98% effective at preventing the spread of HIV and STIs.
Condoms can only be effective if they are worn and used correctly.
Which condoms are the best?
The best condoms are the ones that suit the individual needs of the wearer. The truth is all condoms are effective. No particular type or brand is any more reliable or effective than another. Any other feature is all about what works best for you and your partner. Do you need a large condom, a non-latex condom or a condom that aids delayed ejaculation? Maybe you want to add extra excitement with a textured condom.
Do I need to use lube with a condom?
Using lube with condoms is not essential as most condoms are pre-lubricated.
However, using additional lube will reduce the risk of condoms ripping. This is because lube minimises friction. Using lube with a condom will make sex more comfortable as well as heightening sensations. Meaning every thrust will be even more fun.
What size condom do I need?
The size condom you need depends on the size of your penis. Just like everything else in life a penis can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
Most condoms come with a handy size guide on the packet making things nice and simple. But as a rule of thumb a regular condom will fit most. If you find a regular condom too tight then you may be better suited to a large condom.
